Hong Kong history maker set to join the world’s elite at “Asia’s Major”

The incredible journey of Hong Kong golfer Tiffany Chan is set to take a dramatic new turn next month when she lines up alongside a star-studded field featuring the world’s Top 10 players at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore

Having represented Hong Kong at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, last year saw the 24-year-old become the first golfer from Hong Kong to qualify for the LPGA Tour after finishing second at the tour qualifying school in Florida. And now – thanks to tournament sponsor HSBC – she is heading to Singapore to take part in the event that has earned the reputation of “Asia’s Major”.

As a long-term golf sponsor with a spiritual home in Hong Kong, HSBC spotted Chan’s huge potential and awarded her a sponsor invite to the newly-named HSBC Women’s World Championship, one of the highlights of the annual golfing calendar, which takes place at the Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore (March 1-4).

There, Chan will line up in a 63-strong field featuring the ten best players in the world including World No 1 Shanshan Feng from China, defending champion Inbee Park from South Korea and the quintet of 2017 Major winners in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive golf events ever staged in Asia.

Chan has been on HSBC’s radar for many years as she rose to stardom through the HKGA Junior Development programme, an initiative which inspired the current HSBC Hong Kong Junior Golf Programme. This is seen as a pathway for children to experience the game and develop their skills, with the aim of eventually representing Hong Kong on the biggest stage, of which Tiffany is a big supporter. She enjoyed a stand-out amateur career, becoming a two-time NJCAA champion and winning two professional tournaments before turning professional and earning her LPGA Tour card last year.

Reacting to the news of her sponsor invite, Chan said: “This just keeps getting better and better. It was incredible to represent Hong Kong at the Olympic Games and then to qualify for the LPGA Tour really was a dream come true. Now I’m taking on the best of the best at the HSBC Women’s World Championship – I’m pinching myself a little bit but can’t wait to test myself against a world class field at one of Asia’s toughest courses. What a start to the year – bring it on!”

HSBC Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Asia-Pacific Peter Wong said: “Tiffany is writing her own history here and it’s fantastic that she is representing Hong Kong. As a long-term sponsor of the sport with a spiritual home in Hong Kong, we are delighted to award a sponsor invite to Tiffany.

“Our sponsorship approach is intrinsically linked to our new brand promise – Together we thrive – which is built on the belief that, through partnership we can achieve much more than we can on our own. Just as HSBC helps individuals and businesses around the world fulfil their ambitions, so we are committed to helping the game of golf reach new heights globally.

“In Asia particularly, we have seen many graduates of the HKGA and our junior development initiatives achieve success. We have no doubt Tiffany will inspire many young golf enthusiasts, from Hong Kong and beyond.”

LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan said: "Tiffany is blazing a trail for Hong Kong golf and it’s going to be fascinating tracking her progress. She performed superbly at qualifying school and has got every chance of really making an impact in 2018 – the HSBC Women’s World Championship is a great opportunity for her to compete against the world’s best."
