James Gill and Kitty Tam won the 2020 Hong Kong Men’s and Ladies’ Close Amateur Championship.

Played over the New Course of the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling over the Chinese New Year holidays, the 34-year-old Gill led a 90-strong field from the start to record a four-round total 273; 66-68-71-68, five shots ahead of his nearest challenger, Kim Joonho. Ryan Leung claimed the second runner-up spot after carding 286.

The New Zealand native Gill said: “In the final round, I made sure I stayed in the present moment and concentrated on the next shot throughout. I was very happy with the way I played and hit the right shots when needed. It is a great honour to win the tournament for the first time.”

Gill also took the Mid-Amateur Championship title, with Nick Hioe in second and Stuart Murray third.

Local talent Tam was equally dominant in the ladies’ event that took place between the 5th and 7th February at the same venue.  Her total of 213 included near flawless rounds of 68 (round 1) and 69 (Final round), a feat achieved by no other over the three-day tournament.

The 23-year-old Tam said: “I was very confident with my game and prepared well coming into the tournament. My putting was good, which was the reason I made so many birdies and scored low. I have been practicing at the Hong Kong Golf Club since returning from the US after four years of college. I want to thank the Hong Kong Golf Association and the Hong Kong Golf Club for giving me the opportunity to practice at Fanling.”

Playing in the event for the 10th time, this is Tam’s third victory following wins in 2014 and 2015.  One for the future 12-year-old sensation Arianna Lau demonstrated her immense potential finishing runner-up, with Tiffany Wu in third place.

At the Ladies’ Mid-Amateur Championship, Annabelle Gerber 241; 76-83-82 and Mi-kyoung Lisle 244; 86-80-78 took top honours in Division I & II respectively.

As champions of the Hong Kong Men’s and Ladies’ Close Amateur Championships, Gill and Tam can join the winners of the HKGA-organised Pairs Tournament, Spring Men’s & Ladies’ Tournaments and the Seniors’ Close Championship to challenge for the MercedesTrophy Hong Kong in May this year.  Also, as winners of the Hong Kong Close Amateur Championships they can look forward to an opportunity to take on some of the world’s best professional golfers as winners of these Championships by being given a much-coveted spot at the 2020 Hong Kong Open and Hong Kong Ladies Open respectively both held at the HKGC, Fanling.
